Haitians to Receive Free Solar Ovens

Solar cooking is both an ecological and economical way to prepare food where sun is abundant, especially where people have been displaced and may lack access to a kitchen. With this in mind, Sun Ovens International, Inc., is working with a non-profit aid organization to bring solar relief to those hundreds of thousands still living in tents after the earthquake in Haiti.

Working in conjunction with an aid organization known as Friends of Haiti Organization (FOHO), Sun Oven has provided 135 people with training from the ProgrammeEnergieSolaire of the Free Methodist Mission and Paul Munsen, along with a cardboard CooKit solar cooker. Since electricity is still scarce on the island, many residents have been cooking with wood or charcoal, which contributes to deforestation. By learning to cook using the power of the sun, residents can save both time and resources–but the key, of course, is education.

This eight-hour training course in Pigeon, Haiti, which took place over the course of two days, is the first step for participants interested in receiving a subsidized Global Sun Oven for their families. Those wishing to donate to the program can do so on a tax-deductible basis; according to Sun Oven, Inc., 100% of donations will go towards purchasing Sun Ovens for Haitian communities.
