MUNICH, Germany, July 20 (UPI) -- An investment in wind technology by German engineering company Siemens will contribute to a clean-energy future for Russia, executives said.
Siemens announced plans to install as much as 1,250 megawatts of wind energy in Russia by 2015, topping out at 5,000 megawatts by 2020.
"Green technologies from Siemens will help Russia reach its targets for energy efficiency and climate protection," said Siemens Chief Executive Officer Peter Loscher in a company statement.
Siemens said it was setting up three joint ventures with Russian partners to advance wind energy projects in the country.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin met Loscher last year in Moscow to discuss a sustainable relationship that would contribute to an environmentally friendly energy sector.
Loscher met separately with Alexei Miller, the chairman of Russian gas monopoly Gazprom, to discuss progress under a strategic partnership agreement signed in 2003.
Both parties discussed the prospects of developing energy service infrastructure and production technologies for liquefied natural gas.
