My First DIY Turbine
Hello to you all,
I live in Dublin, Ireland and I have read a lot of the content of the site and it is a very informative and friendly vibe long may it continue. :-)
Over the last 6 months I have developed a conscience about how I and my family live. I have started cycling to work I have stopped eating meat :-) as a family we decided to remove or TV from the family home (this is more to save our sanity) and I have recently become interested in the concept of creating renewable energy. I also spent the last 7 years kiting in all forms from land buggys to land boards to kitesurfing.
As a starting point I would like to build a small wind turbine I have spent the last few weeks investigating the concept of wind power and the components that make up a DIY wind turbine.
I am not doing this to save money I would just like to get an understanding of the concept and how each part works together. I would like to start off by creating enough energy to power a light bulb and then maybe a laptop and nothing too much bigger than that for the moment.
Here is a list of components I found through my investigation.
Basic Components Required For A DIY Wind Turbine
* 30V - 90V DC Permanent Magnet Motor
* 18V - 40V 40A Blocking Diode
* 12V Charge Controller
* 12V 40A Dump Load
* 36V 40A Double Pole DC Rotary Isolator
* 40A Ammeter
* 12V Deep Cycle Batteries
* Suitable Turbine Hub For Blades
* Turbine Blades
* Suitable Cable to connect your components with
I see a few detailed plans on creating a CHISPITO WIND GENERATOR would this be a good start ? I would scale down the span from 4ft to maybe 3ft or a little less. What are your thoughts on maybe using a Vertical wind generator ?
I live in the suburbs with a large back garden so a large turbine would not be practical. But I spend a lot of time on the beach and camping so it could be something I could setup on these occasions.
Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
John
